Taking Nature's Path

Whole Grains

Whole grains are one of the most-important foods in our diet.
Yet, according to researchers from the U.S. Department of Agriculture, 90% of America's population do not eat enough whole grains, making whole grains the most common dietary deficiency in America.
As a result, our country might be faced with an even greater epidemic of obesity, diabetes, heart disease, high blood pressure and, finally, cancer.
Incorporating, or preferably and permanently switching to products containing whole grain is the
first and most significant change we can make in our families' diets.
Whole grains are naturally low in fat, they provide an excellent source of complex carbohydrates, numerous vitamins and minerals (some only found in whole grain), fiber, phytochemicals and antioxidants.

Olive Oil vs. Hydrogenated Oil

Some fat is good for us!

For years, we have been told otherwise.
So the idea that some fat is good for you
might be challenging to accept, but it is true.
But not every kind of fat is good for us,
and even good fats should be consumed in moderation.
You may know how good olive oil is for us.
If you are not now using it in your daily cooking,
I encourage you to consider giving it a chance.
If you think olive oil to be too expensive,
I suggest that you try Costco's 'Kirkland' brand,
Italian Extra Virgin Olive Oil. Costco offers
this high-quality olive oil at a great price.

Here are a few of olive oil's benefits:
- may cut your risk of coronary heart
  disease
- lessens the severity of asthma and
  arthritis
- reduces blood pressure
- inhibits the growth of some cancers
- helps maintain a lower weight
- benefits people with or at risk of diabetes

Some side effects of hydrogenated oils:
  - cancer
- high blood pressure
- high cholesterol

Work on eliminating hydrogenated fat from your and your kids' diet
while experimenting with new ways to incorporate olive oil in your cooking
.

Honey vs. Sugar

Why do so many of us reach for white sugar
when nature has provided us with such a perfect sweetener?

In my opinion, its simply because most of us don't understand and underestimate the full potential and the goodness this natural product has to offer.
I know how silly this may sound to lot of you, but honey makes me happy! Just as blossoming trees or ripening fruit bring happiness to my heart, honey also evokes such wonderful emotions. I love its smooth texture,
its
fragrant smell, its rich color and, most of all, I love its taste.
Ever since I was a child, I used to pretend that I was eatin
g flowers
whenever I tasted ho
ney.
But there are far more valuable reasons why we should love honey.
I encourage you to do some research on your own by simply going on the
internet
and looking up 'honey benefits'.
You will be amazed by your findings!

I will name only few: honey possesses incredible antiseptic properties, contains antioxidants which help us maintain a healthy immune system. Honey has been used  for centuries to treat bacterial and fungal problems. Most of all, honey has carcinogen-preventing and anti-tumor properties. And for those who need a boost now and then, honey is a perfect energy booster.
I encourage you, no I beg you, to learn more about honey. And when you do, try to find a local bee keeper who will be able to supply you with local raw honey. For those of you who live close to Temecula, give a call to my favorite bee keepers,  'the sweetest couple' in our town,
Laura and John Doughty at 951-694-5319.
